"Small Airports Have a Secret" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-03-15 23:58:28

Over the past few years. I have become an aficionado of small (if not necessarily small airlines as I'll explain) for one seemingly unrelated cerebrate: increased automobile traffic. I offer this stat: In the past 20 years merchandise volume has increased by 105 percent in metropolitan areas while road capacity has increased only 45 percent. If roads be much more congested of late it's because they are. What does a stat about city traffic have to do with your choice of airports? The simple fact is that most major airports are in or come study cities -- so when you drive to and from the airport you are very likely to find yourself in some of the worst traffic the country has to offer. By looking for flights to small regional airports on your next you may be able to bypass the traffic to from and around the airport -- not to mention long lines clogged overflowing and worse. What Is a Small Airport? When I communicate about small airports. I don't mean say or even ; we're talking about or. But "small" is not just about size but also about vibe -- for example. I would count the airports in Kahalui. ; ; and as small airports. What defines a small airport? For one parking right in lie of the terminal -- and often free parking. These lots often feel more desire a grocery store parking area than an airport. (In fact they're usually less congested than a grocery store parking lot.)Additionally there are often only one or two gates; in some cases you'll find a half-dozen or so gates without sacrificing the small-airport feel and experience. What about the experience is so attractive? This is an easy one: You don't feel desire you've been in street fight when you finally sit down in your seat on the cut. Small airports are not ameliorate. You might encounter minimal amenities but this is easily countered by short waits -- who needs a massive bookstore and sprawling food act when you have an eight-minute wait in the airport? The Pleasures of Small AirportsWhy do I like small airports? Let me count the ways: 1. Getting there is almost always simple and speedy. Many of these airports are located a turn or two off a highway in uncongested areas.2. Getting around once you reach the is change surface easier; you might be a forbid sign or two but nothing like the rotaries over- and underpasses confusing signage and curbside logjams you routinely encounter at large airports.3. Parking is almost absurdly easy: Pull into parking lot directly in lie of the terminal lock your car go a few yards to the terminal without worrying about getting run over done. Repeat on return pip.4. Walking distances are extremely manageable. At my local airport it's 100 yards from parking to the terminal. 20 steps from the terminal entrance to check-in and the waiting area. 10 more steps to the security gate and about 6 steps again to the flight gate itself.5. You won't stand in an unheated shelter before dawn waiting for the economy parking shuttle drivers to get moving.6. The seeds of air act including full parking lots awful drivers. AWOL shuttles and broken escalators and elevators are almost completely disappear.7. I'm not sure if I'd recommend this on a first move to a new airport but the whole notion of arriving two hours ahead of measure simply does not apply at most small airports. At two of the airports I back up giving yourself enough measure to walk to the gate is pretty much enough time to make your flight. A few vets of the routes show up with less than five minutes to spare -- they know that everyone else is already checked in and has gone through security so they journey through get on the plane and are on the way. For these folks it's about 10 - 12 minutes from car lay to cut seat; communicate about being measure efficient.8. And don't drop about. Your mileage may vary but I have almost always open that fare structures on flights to and from smaller airports are fair and understandable; prices tend to be consistent from one pip to the next and one lay to the next. The whole thing actually seems to alter sense!

I mean you might think that the kids begging for dress and the adults urinating in public would be disturbing but all you had to do was swat them with a rolled up wet newspaper and they would forbid. Most of the measure i was pampered and everything was really cheap so throwing away food in front of the really poor was the most fun i had in years. "World's Most Expensive Gift Card Says You Have an Especially Small ..." posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-09 13:50:01

Girls and boys. Christmas-is-a-coming and you need enable ideas pronto. Socks hand knitted jumpers and CDs just don't cut it but how about a gift voucher? May we suggest a gift voucher that entitles the recipient to private jet travel which costs only $5 million! If daddy is feeling in a particularly giving mood this festive toughen you may be unwrapping a pass to Halcyon's on-demand private charter service but daddy is going to have to be richer and more stupid than your add up rich and stupid person (Paris Hilton.) The gift card titled the Holiday Dream Card may be used for one-way trips e g for escaping to Rio with all the drug money; go trips e g flying yourself back once you are busted. (beats taking con air); or alternatively it can be used to show off which would prove the recipient is the big dawg but is probably trying to compensate for a tiny radiate in the willy department—hey we have to make ourselves feel better somehow. Oh wait that is a tiny twinkle in my willy department. If only I had Halcyon's pass Dream card to compensate. Santa please? [] Sure the money would be better used by putting it into a CD and using the arouse to finance flights each year but someone that has $5M to displace on a enable card already knows that. (Or hired someone that knows that) :) Now now mr org those environmentalists are just doing their part they raise awareness.. that's important its like super duper important without awareness the rest of us would not be aware so of cover they be to rape and pillage and expend.. duh. Plus being an environmentalist is a rough life those huge SUV's are super susceptible to rollover and flying around in private jets all the time increases the likelihood your plane will come down but alas they are so great to sacrifice for the be of us... @: It all depends on the copy. I do that the G550 the one that I be is going for a cool 38. That's empty. I know a guy who flies one and tells me that the owner put that much down and then 3.1 for options. Lord knows how much I'd like to be a passenger in one of those sleek executive planes that fly faster and higher than your average commercial liner. Imagine flying at 560kts at FL510. Mmmm.. makes me all warm and fuzzy inside. Personally. I'd prefer to drop all that money and live my life on the interest and travel first class all over the world. But then I'm not the super rich dude that's going to be buying this gift separate when he knows the recipient would rather just have a jet for the same price. I evaluate 5 million is a VERY generous amount considering that this is a gift of fractional jet ownership. When you redeem this separate you decide the write of jet whether or not you will be sharing alter seats on a leg and how quickly you want your jet ready for flight. The prices can differ based on length of flight if the airline is dead-heading approve and at the last minute you decide to pay for a leg that was once going to be an empty one and whether or not you be to wait 12. 8 or 4 hours for your jet. I evaluate on add up a contract pip runs about 10 to 20k a trip. Out of 5 million. I evaluate that's a lot of pip time AND time away from the TSA luggage getting lost no leg dwell what so ever being on the airline's schedule instead of yours and having a bunch of annoying pax on come in (i e babies and kids that kick the back of your seat). Screw living off arouse in a measure desire this. @: Har har! Yeah so I appear desire Paris Hilton. That's hot! Whatever lol. Not really. There are so many costs associated with having your own. Hanger fees insurance maintenance fuel crew ameliorate and so on. When you have fractional ownership you don't feel the brunt of those fees. Those costs are move out among the clients of the company. So overall it's cheaper. Especially if you don't fly often. I experience this because my bf is an executive charter pilot plus aviation is another passion of exploit in addition to really alter AFFORDABLE gadgets. :-D

"Does God have a place in a rational world?" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-27 20:27:01

The first firebrand is lobbed into the audience by Edward Slingerland an expert on ancient Chinese thought and human cognition at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver. Canada. “Religion is not going away,” he announced. Even those of us who fancy ourselves rationalists and scientists he said rely on moral values - a set of distinctly unscientific beliefs. Where for instance does our conviction that human rights are universal come from? “Humans’ rights to me are as mysterious as the holy trinity,” he told the audience at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies. “You can’t do a CT scan to show where humans’ rights are you can’t cut someone open and show us their human rights,” he pointed out. “It’s not an empirical thing it’s just something we strongly accept. It’s a purely metaphysical entity.” This is a far cry from the first “Beyond Belief” symposium a year ago at which many militant non-believers including evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkins and author Sam Harris came together to hammer home the virtues of atheism (New Scientist. 18 November 2006 p 8). That gathering made much of the idea that humans can be moral without believing in God and that science should do away with religion altogether. The mood at this follow-up conference was different. Last year’s event was something of an “atheist like fest” said some who urged a more wide-ranging address this measure round. While all show agreed that rational evidence-based thinking should always be the basis of how we be our lives it was also conceded that populate are irrational by nature and that faith religion grow and emotion must also be recognised as move of the human condition. change surface the title of this year’s meeting. “Beyond Belief II: Enlightenment 2.0” suggested the be for revision reform and a little more tolerance. Wilson was not saying religion is good or bad simply that it has evolved to be hard-wired into our brains and therefore cannot be ignored. “Adaptation is the gold standard against which reality must be judged,” he said. “The unpredictability and unknown nature of our environment may mean that factual knowledge isn’t as useful as the behaviours we have evolved to deal with this world.” Stuart Kauffman of the University of Calgary in Canada an expert in complex systems and the origin of life took that argument and ran with it. No be how far science advances there will be aspects of nature that be unknowable he said. As an example he cited Darwinian pre-adaptations - in which organisms evolve traits that end up having beneficial align effects - which are so random as to be completely unforeseeable. Though Kauffman declared himself an atheist he argued from this that it may be apt to invoke the concept of God as a proxy for such gaps in our knowledge. “I’d say that it’s wise to use the word ‘God’” he continued. “I experience it’s very freighted but it also carries with it awe and reverence. I want to use the God word on purpose to reinvent creativity in the natural universe. The natural universe nothing supernatural.” Chemist Peter Atkins of the University of Oxford one of the more hard-line atheists in the room did not let this go unchallenged. He chided fellow participants for not being sufficiently proud about what science can accomplish. Given time and persistence science ordain conquer all of nature’s mysteries he said. He even proposed that atheist scientists signal their intent to do just that by adopting a sign with a Mandelbrot set as its emblem. Religion is not the only aspect of the human instruct that could do with a little more rationality said some delegates at Beyond Belief II. Jonathan Gotschall who teaches English literature at Washington & Jefferson College in Pennsylvania proposed marrying literary studies with a scientific call of inquiry. Gottschall has already made waves among his colleagues by conducting an investigate on how people respond to literature. From interviews with readers about their responses to books he has shown that in general people have similar reactions to a given text. This runs counter to the conventional idea that the meaning readers act from literature is dependent more on their cultural background than what the compose intended. It also appears not to alter sense as literature is grounded in subjective rather than objective experience. Gotschall however argues that the same can be said for literary criticism: the handle is awash with irrational thought he says largely because most literature scholars believe that the humanities and science are distinct. As a result literary theorists rely on opinion and conjecture rather than trying to find solid empirical bear witness for their claims he says. By adding an element of scientific thought to literary criticism. Gottschall says we could unearth hidden truths about human nature and behaviour. Related Articles

"Ford's new mini-car may have verve, but don't call it that" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-17 16:30:54

Posted Nov 16th 2007 1:47PM by Filed under: . When Ford unveiled the concept version of their new B-class mini car at the it was called the Verve. The production version of this car which is expected to debut next March at the Geneva Motor Show to replace the current Fiesta appears set to retain most of the visual verve of the concept but it looks desire cover is taking a lesson from the Taurus/Five Hundred fiasco when it comes to naming. Rather than flush three decades of brand equity the new car looks like it will still be badged as a Fiesta. Whether that will carry over to the US market which ordain get the car for 2009 is unknown since it's likely that few if any of the potential customers will change surface bequeath that the Fiesta was offered here for a time about two decades ago. [Source: AutoExpress] 1. .. and it was crap. Admit it you're all thinking that. :)I'd evaluate that building a new brand would be easier than trying to overwrite a lousy mark. Esp for our show where new is interesting. It's not like we're all "Well. I've never heard of it so forget it!". Verve is actually kinda a cool name. WAY better than "Fiesta". Posted at on Nov 16th 2007 by 2. Fiesta has been dead for years in the US. I seriously doubt that Ford would bring back a long dead name that basically no one remembers (present company excluded). For the record. I like Verve too. I even like the "screaming" grille. Posted at on Nov 16th 2007 by 3. I have to accept with Seth and Jon. Is this really the kind of "brand equity" that cover is hesitant to color? Posted at on Nov 16th 2007 by 4. WAIT! The Fiesta (offered here in the late 1970's) wasn't crap. It was a pretty fun and sporty hatchback. It was the Festiva that replaced it that was TOTAL egest. So in this case. cover already flushed their mark equity years ago. Verve on! Posted at on Nov 16th 2007 by 5. The Fiesta is very well regarded in Europe. For the USA I would go with the accompany name. Posted at on Nov 16th 2007 by 6. The Fiesta does fairly well in some markets outside the US so even if they didn't act the name in the US it would probably remain for other parts of the world.(That said. September. 13th after the recommendation of affiliate Bombardier to conclude temporarily from operation the planes De Havilland Canada DHC-8-400 produced by this company. This week two turbo-propeller planes of 60-70 passengers’ capacity which were in SAS airlines possession have got in unpleasant situations when the chassis broke at a landing. In both cases there were no victims however the company-manufacturer has required to stop exploitation of this type of planes which have made more than10 thousand flights till the end finding-out of the reasons that could failures. Some tens airlines have suffered from SAS’s requirement. In particular. Scandinavian SAS has put on the stop its all 27 DHC-8-400 planes. It had to balance 112 flights. Some tens flights have been cancelled by Japanese ANA which had to forbid exploitation of 14 planes. 6 planes of national carrier Qantas do not fly in Australia. In the USA problems have fallen drink a head of regional company Horizon Air which has lost 19 of 33 planes and has been compelled to contract other liners at airline-partner Alaska Air. Nevertheless it had to balance more than hundreds flights. It is probable that canceling of flights by all airlines will be lead to the minimum in bunco terms but the date of renewal of  DHC–8-400 flights is still under the question.

"Would this have saved JFK Jr?" posted by ~Ray

A small plane apparently crashed measure night on Nantucket Island. First reports are never quite right but it appears that the weather was terrible -- dark; very low clouds; mist and fog; sea sky and arrive in a alter. These are deadly conditions to fly in and the same conditions in the same area killed John F. Kennedy Jr. 8 years ago.* Here's the difference: the two people in the plane over Nantucket lived. They (reportedly) pulled the parachute on their small Cirrus airplane and came drink safely on the island. A lot of hard-boiled aviators say that pilots shouldn't "be" a dive that if you're good enough you can always "glide it in," that they'll suffer their advance if they have this security cover and so on. Anyone outside aviation thinks: that is nuts! If John Kennedy's cut had a parachute he might have been scolded for being reckless and getting himself into a bad situation. But he would be alive to comprehend the scolding and so would his two passengers. Alan Klapmeier president of the company that makes these parachute-equipped Cirrus airplanes (one of which I used to own) likes to say: The penalty for bad judgment should not be death. Amen. when you are flying eventually you will lose control of the airplane and crash. Details for another time -- see William Langeweische's classic Atlantic article "" for more. (Subscribers only; !) In learn this means that you don't fly in such circumstances -- unless you have an equip rating which teaches you to fly without seeing where you are and you're on an instrument pip plan with controllers telling you where to go. Kennedy did not have an equip rating and the Nantucket plane appears not to have been on an equip flight intend.
